Students are happy to be back in the building. Remote learning was necessary, but not the best for all students. Now that they are back in the building, they want to be creative. Students will use colorful and quality markers, pencils, pens, and WRITE ON PAPER! They took that for granted before! I also want to place a book in their hands and have them turn pages and read what is on a page rather than on a screen! This project will help kids be creative, feel like they are learning and take a break from screen time! Students will be reading the novel "Peace, Locomotion" about a 12 year old boy and a younger sister who become separated after their parents pass away. They are both placed in foster care and sent to live with two different families. The book consists of short letters that a big brother writes to his little sister in hopes of becoming a family again. Many of my students come from broken homes with similar circumstances. I hope this story will touch their hearts and give them hope. By seeing the struggle, the fear, love, determination and hope of this character, Lonnie, I hope students will feel like they too can make the most of what they have. With this novel study, students will learn new vocabulary, and learn how to use reading strategies to help them better understand the text. These reading strategies include: predicting, inferring, drawing conclusions, supporting judgements, finding relevant and irrelevant information.
