The need for social emotional learning is greater than ever. The pandemic has shifted all our lives, and as an educator I see how it has affected students most. The isolation, loss, and loneliness of remote learning and the pandemic caused students to have significant and unprecedented emotional needs. Not addressing unresolved trauma in children through social emotional learning can affect their memory and concentration. Students grow socially and emotionally at the same time they are developing academically; ignoring social and emotional skills development will have an adverse effect on academics. Through literature read aloud and discussed during class, students will learn what actions to take when they are feeling anxious or emotional. Other materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will be used to create a Calm-down Corner. Students will be able to revisit some of the books read and even identify how they are feeling with the books and with the help of visuals provided. They may then choose an activity from the toolbox in the Calm- down Corner. Different students will have different needs, so there will be a variety of items for the student to choose from. It may be a puzzle, a fidget, a sensory plush, or a quick activity. The items I am asking you for will help students decompress, regroup, and re-engage in learning. They can then return to their seats and use the Bouncy Bands. The bands will provide the needed support to stimulate the brain, boost mental performance, release extra anxiety and energy, and stay focused. Students will spend less time having behavioral outbursts and spend more time having a successful academic year.
