My students and I will use these books to create a literature-driven classroom where they can both enjoy reading and learn from reading. The students really cherish the books that I can provide to them, and they care for the books as if they were their own. Many of them do not have the opportunities to read literature from diverse writers, so the books have been chosen with that in mind. I have watched them become enraptured with books that represent their own specific culture, and I want to provide them with the chance to read books that represent them within the world. With these books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of genres and cultures represented. It will give them a reason to read independently at their own grade level. The interest level of these books will also encourage students to read for pleasure instead of purely for school value. They are beginning to show a surprising interest in reading that is unprecedented in our area, and I would love to supply them with books that they can connect with on a level that goes beyond "classwork."
