The Nevada Academic Content Standard, "3-LS4-3. Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.," is representative of the standards all K-5 students are learning in the school garden. During COVID-19, students learned about surviving. There were shortages of items they needed to survive. There were clear examples of how some humans survived and some did not survive the virus. There were many examples of how habitats meet or do not meet the needs of the inhabitants. The school garden teaches students hands-on lessons about the organisms that grow and thrive in our climate. They see and experience how plants adapt to their environment. They create an environment that helps plants thrive. They experience the life cycles of plants and insects found in the garden. Finally, they experience decomposition as they feed the composter and witness how plants become soil.
