This project and materials will go towards students learning and growing their chess games. As a counselor, I have used the game of chess as a way to address and work on certain social/emotional difficulties that are present in our school. A few examples that I have seen are that students with ADHD showing high levels of focus, students with oppositional defiance disorder understanding and accepting loses without arguing, and other skills surrounding problem solving and planning ahead. Another huge benefit of these materials will be to increase parental engagement and many students this year have asked if they can bring a chess board home in order to teach their caregivers how to play. I would love the opportunity to send loaner chess boards home or even give some out as prizes to tournament winners to allow them to play at home and bond with family.
