I want to add books to my classroom library that provide students with options that interest them and help grow their self-esteem. Many of my students are struggling with their identities and with peer interactions in the wake of our year of online learning, and there are so many stories out there that address the issues they are currently facing. From dealing with mental health to losing family members to facing discrimination, my students have shared their struggles with me this year through personal journal entries, and I want to help them find stories that they can connect to and feel supported by. My classroom library is sorely missing resources that represent all students of the 21st century, and many of my current books are outdated and hard for 8th graders to connect to. This project would allow me to update my library with books they are actually interested in that showcase a variety of diverse protagonists, from LGBTQ characters to teens of all cultural backgrounds. Providing literature like this for students would also be greatly beneficial to encourage them to practice their independent reading skills (RL.1-10 and RI.1-10), as it is proven that the more students read, the better they are at reading. Many of my students are below grade level, so I selected a variety of texts to support a wide range of readers. I also want to give them options to continue exploring their feelings through their writing as well, so I selected journaling-related books to help them better process their emotions.
