The students will help build an Aquaponics system in the classroom using an IBC tote. They will use this system to design experiments growing vegetables and raising tilapias. They will learn about photosynthesis, the nitrogen cycle, the needs of plants and fish, and the interdependence of living and no living components of ecosystems. They will have the opportunity to design and build their own system. They will also learn the history of hydroponics and how this method of growing food can help alleviate the stress that large-scale food production poses on the environment.
