Research shows us that flexible seating results in improved academic performance. By providing my students with learning disabilities the option to sit somewhere and in a way that is most conducive to their learning they will be more successful and they will also have a feel empowered to take charge of their education. These supplies will allow students to sit how and where they feel the most comfortable when working independently and to sit in a seat that allows them to have more movement than a traditional desk. My goal is to make my students feel like they are in a safe environment when they are in my class be it physically or emotionally; a big part of feeling safe is feeling comfortable. Traditional desks do not provide students with the comfort needed to improve their feeling of safety. Now more than ever our students need more emotional support to feel safe as they are struggling academically in many cases to fill in the learning gaps created by learning during the pandemic. A have a couple of flexible seating options in my room currently (not nearly enough) and I can see just how much more engaged my students are when they can use these seats. I will also be able to better assist my students in eliminating the learning gaps created by the pandemic if they are more engaged in my class.
