Coming back to face-to-face learning has been incredibly beneficial for students. Although the students and I are extremely grateful to be back, COVID has taken away so much from the students. Students were not able to practice the skills they need in order to move on in reading levels. It is not enough to just read, students must comprehend in order to summarize details and write about them. I will use the tablets for students to listen to stories, so they can hear how words are properly pronounced. They can also see the pictures so they can retell the stories. RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. RL.2.2 Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral. RL.2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. These standards contain a vertical alignment, which will focus on skills they lost during COVID and will prepare them for third grade. Since reading and writing are reciprocal, these skills will also cover the Nevada Academic Content Standards in writing: W.2.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. W.2.3 Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
