My students spend every day right now in an empty classroom. No sparkle, no shine! Gray walls with nothing to cover them! No supplies that allow them to complete basic classroom tasks. Very little was salvaged from the floodwaters in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. The differences in my pre- and post-Ida classroom is startling. After 27 years of teaching, I made sure that my students felt comfortable and welcomed in their home away from home. Having my students ask me to staple their paper and not having a stapler was gut-wrenching! My hope is to be able to give my students back a sense of normalcy, to show them that we will bounce back, that recovery is possible! (at school, at home, and in our community). I want them to have the amenities that they are used to! Whether it be something as simple as markers or some of the more complex technology we are used to in our former learning environment like a printer and calculators. I want them to have a safe, colorful place to learn that has everything they need to be successful!
