A huge part of learning in the area Special Education is motivation. Students MUST be motivated to learn. Learning must be engaging and fun. Students with special needs often require reinforcement for good behavior or for attending to and engaging in instruction . SL.K.1- SL.12.1(Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.). Magna Tiles and Legos are a great for reinforcing good behavior and for prompting team work within the classroom setting. When students work together to build something, they must engage in conversation in order to be successful (7.PK.5 Engage in conversation and sometimes follow conversational rules). Communication is not just using words. A good chunk of my caseload consists of students that are working on building their functional communication skills such as making eye contact or using gestures or pictures to make their needs known ( 8. PK. Use and expand vocabulary to describe feelings, experiences, observations and ideas) This is such an important skill to have. By engaging in play, students are exposed to SO much language and at the same time they are motived to use language (eye contact, requesting objects, making needs/wants known) because they are having fun. For example, Mr. Potato head helps teach body parts and clothing so that eventually a student can point to a picture of a shoe to indicate that they need help tying their shoe or label a body part if they have gotten hurt. Funding my project would mean that my students have new materials and toys to teach and motivate them.
