Students come into high school with vastly different perspectives on reading. On the first day of school I had students write a journal entry about "How do you feel about reading and why?" This brought in some interesting answers. The following day, they answered the question "What would make you feel differently about reading and why?" An overwhelming number of students admitted between these two answers that they had never picked a book of their own to read for "fun." Reading to many of them has always been a chore, a punishment, or tied to an assignment. Allowing diversity of text in my classroom, paired with the freedom of choice for READ 10, gives students the opportunity to see how they actually feel about reading for themselves.
By funding my classroom library, you are giving 9th grade students the change to reimagine their thoughts and beliefs on reading. With your help they can excel in expression, communication, and comprehension by engaging in reading again.
Additionally, the diverse book-load I desire contains representation for many minority students that I have in my classroom. This representation as the main character in suggested books tells all students that they are welcome and worthy of being in my class and in literature.
Thank you!
