My school is participating in Battle of the Books for the first time. Students are in teams of three and each team will read twenty titles on our state's list. With over ten teams, we need quite a few books. Unfortunately, almost none of the books are in our school library and more students want to participate than I could have imagined--almost a quarter of our students! We even have a waiting list. Few of our students go to the public library, so if our school doesn't own the books, they will have a hard time tracking them down. Battle of the Books encourages a love of reading and a culture of reading, as students bond over books and compete to be the most knowledgeable about them. By encouraging voluminous reading, it also helps build reading skills and students' vocabulary.
