My true excitement for this project comes from the ability of these books to reach students who have felt that reading is not for them. For so long I have tried to get students engaged in reading by taking them down to our library but because our school's library serves more than 3,400 students by the time our kids arrive the books of high interest are already depleted or because they have fees on their library accounts they are unable to request books. My students scream out, "We want books that apply to us, and "When will we read a book that features a character that looks like me?" My students want a collection of books for students with various backgrounds, interests, and diversity that can serve for years to come. With a library in my classroom, it will allow my students to choose books that they can take home and borrow without the fear of late fees. By asking other teachers, students, and colleagues I have put together a selection of books that are of high interest and accessible reading level. My vision is that every student who comes to my class can find a book that fits their desires.
