Time in a sensory room helps children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills. By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus. Some children with autism feel disconnected from their bodies and crave physical sensations to center themselves. I have chosen the trampoline, pea pod chair, crash pad, sensory sock and exercise balls. In addition, children with autism are often overwhelmed by harsh lighting, in order to help with that I have chosen the bubble column. Some of our students self regulate by inflicting self harm. To help decrease these occurrences I have chosen the floor scooters, and weighted balls. I would be overjoyed to be able to create this room, not only for my students, but also for all of the students in our unit.
