The reality of COVID-19 has altered many aspects of everyday life. Even before the worldwide pandemic, the social-emotional skills necessary for young people to build effective and productive relationships was being strained. Part of what I and the rest of the Multi Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) team do in our district is coach our staff on how to implement Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) in their classrooms and promote Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at each level schoolwide to help teach students the essential skills to build and sustain positive, human relationships. As part of our PBIS program, we aim to incentivize students into engaging in positive behaviors towards themselves and others and encourage them to exhibit appropriate schoolwide expectations at all times. Currently 100% of the students in Pershing County qualify for free or reduced lunch and many of our students and their families are not financially able to afford higher-priced, lifestyle, technology items, such as earbuds, bluetooth speakers, or wireless phone chargers. These accessories not only help keep students engaged in learning away from school when they have to have technology to stay connected, they also help promote the mental health of many of our students who use music as a healthy coping mechanism when they may be struggling with something in their lives. For those students who have alternate coping strategies, art supplies or tactile tools may help relieve their stress and anxiety. Through our PBIS rewards system, students will be able to redeem their points to “purchase” these items that they otherwise might not be able to get access to or our school might not be able to afford to offer them without financial assistance. Your support will help make this possibility into a reality. Thank you!
