We need physical writing journals in our classroom (as opposed to shared online documents) to help my students stay focused and on task while also practicing their handwriting. There is something that much more engaging about writing in your very own journal, seeing your thoughts become words on the page and watching as those entries add up into a notebook full of your own musings and ideas from the year. As an English teacher, my goal is to show my students that they are, in fact, writers. Providing them with a low risk space to sharpen those skills, like a daily journal, will allow them to continue growing into that identity.
