Students that participate in Direct Instruction tend to have a common experience in the general education classroom. They can begin to believe that school is just not for them. Assessing their skills or retention can require a creative approach. Allowing my students to express their understanding creatively can unearth a well of possibilities. I attempt to offer creative opportunities to express what they have learned. The Board Game Project is a chance for students to think creatively and reach a depth of knowledge that would otherwise not be possible. The projects that require students to problem solve how to express what they not only know, as in factual information, but make connections beyond the classroom and think critically about what they have learned, allow a greater depth of knowledge. In other words, student learning that sticks and becomes purposeful!
