As a new 4th grade teacher my students are limited to a very small collection of books. This project will help create a reading nook complete with bean bags and books for all students to enjoy. The whiteboards will help them to share their ideas with their classmates. The file folders and pencil sharpener will help with collaborative table projects. This will also allow students to develop leadership and organizational skills by independently being able to access the daily information for their group without teacher direction. Reading is fundamental to student achievement across the curriculum, so by strengthening these skills students will be able to achieve a higher understanding of all academic standards. Some of the standards that will be enhanced due to this project are: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character's thoughts, words, or actions). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.4.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly. SL.4.1 will help students be able to learn how to have an effective academic conversation. Due to the pandemic, many students lack these skills because of the loss of face-to-face social interactions. The reading nook will make a comfortable and safe space for these conversations to occur.
