My students are terrific sixth graders who missed learning in the classroom for the last year and a half, so they are coming from a fourth grade approach to the year. My class has books available, but the rich illustrations and 3-Dimensional aspect of these books are sure to engage them. A content standard that is not hit as frequently throughout the year is CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.9 Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics, which is addressed with these unique types of books. They combine nonfiction with fiction and enhance the reading experience overall. Students who are creatively captivated are more likely to read the entire seven book series after being interested in the other forms of literature that lend themselves to great compare and contrast activities.
