Students love reading and writing stories, but often in forms that are not associated with the English classroom. They record videos for social media platforms, create music through whatever technology they have available, and make stories come to life through their own illustrations. One of my primary goals this year is to bridge the gap between beloved methods of storytelling and the English classroom. The first is by providing recording devices that work with available Chromebooks. Not only will these devices allow for podcasting projects that address Nevada Speaking & Listening standards - specifically SL5 - but they will also allow for writing projects and presentations to be recorded for introverted students who find live presentations intimidating. The second aspect of the project is building an in-classroom library of story games for students to play through and analyze like any other piece of literature. Many students love playing videogames at home, including language-heavy games with complex themes and narrative structures, but they lack a space to bridge that enjoyment with critical thinking. The Switch library will allow short games to be taught in a narrative context, while also giving students the opportunity to experience stories they might otherwise be financially unable to access. Such media would be taught alongside more traditional texts to increase student engagement and allow them to explore Nevada reading standards like R1 - R3 through a different lens. If this project succeeds, I will personally supplement the collection with download-only story games that are unavailable through Donors Choose.org like Undertale, Kentucky Route Zero, and Life is Strange. My overall goal is to give students another route to falling in love with stories, and consequently propel them to write in whatever medium they find most engaging.
