Students have been under a lot of pressure during the COVID Pandemic and some are re-entering school from being gone from school. Coping strategies and calming techniques will help students to reduce anxiety and reset them to learn. The items chosen for my project(canopy, pillows, fidgets, rugs, etc), are to help put together a Calming Corner for students that are under pressure and/or experiencing emotions that are difficult at the moment. Students tend to react and not perform when under pressure and having the skills, a safe place, to rest, and use the calming corner to practice/learn coping skills will empower the individual to learn and reset emotions. Fear and anxiety are on the rise and students need to know that the calming corner is here for them to get away and talk. Coping skills, deep breathing, using fidgets, reading books, in the calming corner will be encouraged and reminded frequently. If students feel that they are being heard and that their fears can be controllable, they will feel empowered to move forward. Continued Coping Skills lessons and teachable moments will be re-taught until students feel comfortable to self-advocate on their own.
