These books, written by brilliant current authors with faces that reflect the diversity of our student body, will hardly make it out of the boxes before they are claimed by “book club kids”. Book club meets monthly, and it is a time when kids with varying family situations, sexual identities, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds gather together around a book (and some light refreshments) to talk about how their differing life experiences influenced their understanding of the work. Students need access to books that help them develop empathy and engage in difficult conversations with open minds and civil language. The beautiful thing about book club is that these students go on to have conversations with their peers, families, and teachers about the books that they’ve read, which inspires others to read and discuss these books. These conversations also help with the social-emotional learning that is so necessary after our students endured all the trials of growing up during a global pandemic.
