Highly gifted children are often precocious learners who can master content quickly and easily. However, they are an at-risk population with special needs. They often have high levels of anxiety, emotional intensities, low self esteem because of high self expectations and feelings of isolation. Teaching gifted students to play an instrument develops perseverance, determination, and grit to stick with a task even when it becomes difficult. Even though these students are smart, they often don't meet challenges until they are older and can then become afraid that they are not capable students because the work is no longer easy. Learning to persevere when things become difficult is a life long skill that all people need, especially our gifted students. Developing the ability to play an instrument can enhance their self esteem, build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, facilitate physical, cognitive, and emotional development as well as providing a creative outlet for emotions.
