My students need access to a variety of book formats that encourage individuality. Reluctant readers as well as ready readers all have different learning styles that need to be catered to.
The multiple intelligences of students dictate that Award winning picture books with rich illustrations will reach a visual child while books with rhyme and flow will delight a child who is more of an auditory learner. Kinesthetic learners appreciate books that offer tactile sensations and so there are needs for books beyond the standard black and white type-font that is typical in a middle school classroom. These books promote Academic Content Standard 8.10, Students should be able to read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the 6-8 grade text complexity band with proficiency and scaffolding as necessary toward the high end of the range. These books also promote cultural awareness and will bring a sense of identity to a diverse student body that struggles to see itself in the everyday classroom.
