Before a child can begin to learn, they need to be in a space where they feel safe, calm, happy, and welcomed. More than ever, our students are showing a need for mindfulness activities. There is a reason fidget toys and sound machines are among some of the most popular toys. Children are seeking out healthy ways to cope with some very BIG emotions. The number of students in the elementary setting that I am seeing with anxiety is higher than in my previous years as a school counselor. Combine the effects of the pandemic and other adverse childhood experiences, and we are heading toward a scary new reality. A reality where children of all ages are needing social emotional learning, access to mental health, and intense emotional support. My hope is, that by creating a space that children are happy to visit, where they can pull up a comfy bean bag, play with a fidget toy, they will open up to their school counselor about how they are feeling. Then the journey toward healing can begin. My vision is that this will be an environment that will reflect the heart of our school community. I am hoping that teachers and school staff are able to utilize this space for mindful moments as well. Thank you for considering my project, and making a difference in a child's life.
