The use of calculators is necessary in 8th grade math. Our curriculum requires students to use a scientific calculator. Additionally, calculator skills are important in everyday life. It is vital that each student is able to have their own calculator. In order for students to retain these skills, independent practice is necessary. It is also important for all students to have the same calculator in order for instruction to be effective. Every calculator is different; therefore, consistency is the key, especially in these trying times. All students having the tools they need will assist in student achievement and help improve instruction.
