My students are 4 years old when the school year begins, and all turn 5 by the beginning of December. They are full of energy and love for exploration and learning. We are located in Lake County which is in a very rural part of Northern California. Our county has a high rate of poverty. More tragic than that, though, are the Wildland Fires that have torn through our county and surrounding counties for the past 3 years. Our community was severely impacted in 2015 destroying 1,200 homes. We have been impacted by major fires every year since then. Our students and parents are all traumatized by these horrifying and devastating disasters.
