Manipulatives are a great way to teach concepts. As adults we sometimes forget that middle schoolers are also children that love to move around the classroom, work in groups and do some discovery learning. Using manipulatives help students develop a better understanding of the what and the how of math. By using manipulatives like base-10 blocks and and integer tiles, they get to see why a negative plus a positive is. By using manipulatives, it is more engaging for students. Many of my students (in regular math) do not have number sense, so the base-10 blocks help master that concept. The 3-ring binders are for students to hold their workbook pages (organized) that we tear pages out of so they don’t need to carry around the 400-page workbook.
