There are many third-grade students who could benefit from the use of leveled readers and book sets. Based on benchmark data, my class has a significant number of students reading well below grade level. To support these students, I would like to purchase sets of leveled readers. The use of leveled readers allows students who are working significantly below grade level to focus on their needs. These students need texts that allow them to develop phonics skills using predictable patterns. Also, these texts provide large amounts of picture support for students to deepen their comprehension. Leveled readers often utilize spelling patterns that are also at the developmental levels of these below grade level students. Use of leveled readers will target the skills addressed in Common Core Standards for reading foundational skills (RF.3.3 and RF.3.4) I believe that the use of leveled readers will help develop below grade level students’ reading abilities. I would also like to challenge my above grade level students and help build their comprehension using book sets in guided reading groups. Sets of high interest texts are a great way to engage students in their reading. The availability of several sets of high interest transitional readers or novels will allow students to be exposed to various genres and provide them the opportunity to choose what they would like to read. This type of engagement is key to developing students who love to read and building their reading skills. In guided reading groups I can address various literary standards and reading foundation standards including RL.3.1-3.6, RL3.9-3.10, RF.3.4.
