In our classroom, our morning routine, circle times, and storytimes are spent sitting on our favorite alphabet rug. However, being that my students are prone to wanting to get up and move, keeping them seated for the entire duration of “carpet time” can be very challenging. By adding fun but comfortable seating, I am hoping to keep them engaged for longer durations of group work - not to mention working on cleaning up and clearing a space AFTER group work…yay for life skills! We also LOVE to create art projects that go along with the fun stories we read, and having a color printer for our worksheets will surely make completing projects even more engaging and motivating! After working so hard through group work and projects, brain breaks are a MUST! During breaks, I like to have sensory-friendly activities for my students to choose from to continue to stimulate all their motor skills while still engaging in something fun and highly preferred. Our classroom currently has a variety of play dough, slime, and blocks, but adding more educational and interactive toys (like a giant train set, magnet connectors, and building sticks) can encourage sharing, group play, and turn-taking…all skills that students with ASD sometimes have difficulty mastering. We love learning through play and discovering new ways to engage in our surroundings!
