There are many diverse learners that come into my classroom each year. I don’t think that traditional classroom seating meets the needs of all my students. I think flexible seating would meet the following needs: Comfort: I believe that students who are comfortable in their seat may have an easier time focusing and remaining productive. Students who are uncomfortable in their seats are often up out of their chairs and distracting themselves and their classmates. Community/Collaboration: My class is often focused on student-centered, collaborative assignments and activities. I think students would feel more connected to the class and their group if they were comfortable and felt like they had a role in selecting their type of seat. Sensory input/productive movement: Neurodiverse students in my classroom often require sensory input that can distract from their concentration, if their needs aren’t met. With flexible seating I can better meet their accommodations and create a place where they feel like their needs don’t separate them from their peers.
