Supplies like personal computation whiteboards, magnetic base ten blocks, and magnetic number lines will help my students practice number and operations in base ten standards (4.NBT.A,B), which is one of their greatest areas of need according to teacher observation and MAP testing. These interactive and manipulative resources will help save time during computational practice, so that students and I can focus on practice rather than drawing a place value chart, for example. Interactive materials and high interest books such as graphic novels and poetry will increase student engagement and access to grade level content for ALL students. Pictures and smaller sections of text found in poetry and graphic novels provide a comfortable starting point to rich reading, writing, and speaking experiences for many students. The graphic novels and poetry on my list will help all students engage in standards such as RL.4.1, 2, 4, and 5: referring to details and examples in a text to support explanations and inferences, determining theme or the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, and writing and speaking about differences between poems, prose, and structural elements of poems.
