A former 1st grade teacher of 16 years, I am embarking on my second year as a 6th-grade Social Studies and ELA teacher. This change has been wonderful, but also left me starting from scratch as far as classroom supplies go. Recreating clay tablets is one of the STEM projects I enjoy doing in Social Studies, as my students will learn about how written language has advanced through the hands-on recreation of Sumerian Cuneiform. Using clay and carving tools, they will attempt to write a message in Cuneiform on a miniature clay "tablet." Having a full class set of the novels Walk Two Moons and Freak the Mighty will enhance our novel studies by providing each student a book he/she can bring home and back. Sharing books is generally not a problem, but with CoVid restrictions, I prefer each child have his/her own book. Further, it's often a challenge to check out books from the school library. Because as an ELA/SS department, we work together with planning and preparation, other teachers are competing to check out the same titles at the same time. Having my own set would be a huge game changer for my students and for me!
