2-LS2-1. Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow. K-LS1-1 Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive. Earlier in the year, with my 2nd-grade science class, we started an experiment testing the effects of differing amounts of sunlight and water on plant growth. My school has very few windows, so the plants had to be grown outside. The problem is that Las Vegas has some extremely hot temperatures and intense sun exposure, and as a result, most of the plants quickly died. It was just too hot and sunny for plants to grow so soon after germination. I had to scrap the science experiment and many of my students were upset. I am including an order for raised garden beds and grow lights so that we can run the experiment inside my science room. The kids will be so happy to restart the project, and I will actually be able to share this experiment with all my classes, grades K-5. I also added a fossil kit for my fourth and fifth graders, and a chemistry experiment kit that I think would be fun for all grades. In addition to the science kits and grow materials, I am including materials to help organize my science closet, particularly plastic containers. I am also including basic materials such as markers and colored pencils for my students to use on worksheets and other classwork.
