Teaching the Holocaust can be intense, but I have found using the novel The Devil’s Arithmetic very effective. There is always respectful and meaningful conversation following our daily readings. I integrate lessons on respect and acceptance of differences in this unit as well. I would love for each of my students to have the opportunity to check out their own copy of this book. With our current situation of COVID exclusions, it makes it difficult for some students to keep up on the reading if they miss class. They will be able to stay caught up and even participate in virtual discussions.
