Learning to read and write happens in a variety of ways. We read aloud together, we read in small groups, we practice sight words, and we enjoy independent reading time as well. During independent work times it is so much fun for my students to build words with these magnetic letters on baking sheets. The colorful letters help students to distinguish between consonants and vowels, the magnets spark their creativity and curiosity, and these magnetic letter games lead students to forget that they are actually working hard and learning new skills because they are having so much fun. These independent learning activities enable students to grow independently while other small groups can work with a teacher. The small group work helps me to see where each student is developing, striving, and thriving, and to support their needs in a much more focused way than in the whole group.
