My students have been diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, Oppositional Defiance Disorder and Anxiety. They struggle with math and reading, but they also struggle with poor self-esteem and regulating their emotions in the school environment. We work very hard in my room on their academic goals such as learning to read fluently but even more so this year on regulating our emotions, staying focused on our work and keeping a growth mindset. As children during the past few years they feel like they have no control over anything. Giving them choices in the classroom, as small as they may seem, can make all the difference in helping a student stay engaged and focused on the task in front of them. A calm and comfortable resource room is a place where my students can come no matter what kind of help they need, and can feel safe and secure. They are listened to, respected and loved for who they are and for what they are capable of, and reminded of all the amazing things they have ahead of them. These items: Surf Seats so they can work on the floor; foldable laptop tables if they prefer to work standing up; floor cushions to sit on; weighted lap pads for when they're feeling anxious; an ocean projector and jellyfish lamp for when they need help calming down; fidgets for when they're restless; and affirmation cards and growth mindset books will all help my students continue to grow in so many ways and will let me help them be successful in all of their goals.
