These books will be used for Independent Reading all year long. I begin each year with Book Speed Dating to expose students to wonderful books from all different genres to pique their interest. The books from this project are to expand my already growing library. Since 2019, when I began focusing on students Independent Reading, I discovered that my library was lacking in book series and fantasy, so the bulk of my requests are in those two areas. I have two empty bookshelves in my room ready to add these books so students can begin checking them out. Students who are planning to go to college must read more books; the average college student reads between “200-600 pages a week” (Kittle, Book Love). Yep, you read that correctly “200-600 pages a week.” And that is not only English majors, but that also includes math, science, business, etc. In a survey this year most of my students (90%) have not read a book for pleasure since 5th grade...I teach juniors in high school. These works will help me hook them into reading. I will give them tons of amazing Young Adult Literature books first and then weave in the novels of literary merit when they are ready. Everyone says teenagers hate reading, the do not, they hate reading books they are forced to read. They hate reading books where they have no choice. Find the right book in the right genre and even the most ardent anti-reader will become a reader. Thank you for helping me find the books to convert these amazing kids to life-long readers.
