Each classroom at my school has a calm down corner or a chill space. This space is used for when students emotions are running too high during class. Students need to refocus or take a break. An important element in calming corners are timers. Students are allotted a certain amount of time in the calming corner to take a break, focus and then they join the class. Visual timers allow students to understand the concept of time without having to be able to tell time.
Visual timers work for all students no matter their: grade level, native language or level of language proficiency. Students can see the time remaining on a visual timer without have to figure out the hands on a clock. Students can look at the visual timer and know for themselves how much longer they have left without having to ask. Students are at school to learn but students can not learn when they are not self-regulated. Calming corners have become an important spot in our classrooms and visual timers will allow students to use them to their full potential and ultimately help students succeed academically.
