STEAM is Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. STEAM is cross curricular and allows students to show their learning through different modalities. For example, in a math lesson, students can use the building materials I have requested to show their mastery of 3D shapes, measurement, and data, just to name a few areas. In engineering, students can use the building materials, science materials, and pastels to design and create projects that reinforce the thematic units I teach. Right now we are learning about animals in the desert. A student can take these materials outside to show their understanding of animal structures and functions by building a shelter that shows their understanding of an animals needs in a specific habitat. The oil pastels can be used to show their understanding through the art medium. Science and Art Integration allows students to take charge of their learning and to show the best ways to work within their own individual learning modalities. The positive carpet squares I have requested will be used to promote social and emotional growth within the classroom, as well as helping with management and spacing of students to remain as healthy as possible. The jumpropes and parachute will encourage patterning, spatial reasoning, and teamwork. The number one skill needed for children to thrive in a job market today is TEAMWORK. I believe the items I have requested will promote growth in ALL areas of the WHOLE child as well as encourage more learning through STEAM.
