Our students are continually working to bring their ideas to life and, through the application of scientific concepts (STEM), we are able to engineer our dreams. In the spirit of finding practical applications for these ideas, we are looking forward to building an actual, life-sized ice fort this winter. Our intentions are for the class to be able to witness first-hand how magic and whimsy can be made real through the various pursuits of science. Using the robust set of material found in a winter exploration, the young scholars will be able to apply introductory chemistry and math concepts as well as problem-solving skills (etc.). I want my young artists to enjoy having ownership over something with this level of grandeur and to be able to draw inspiration from the experience as they enter into their respective, academic careers. We anticipate that the various stages of this project will help to bolster our students' familiarity with STEM ideas. The students will delve into an exploration of natural and artificial temperature manipulation by introducing a chemical reaction between salt and ice and the observation of weather patterns. Engineering concepts will help our group to plan the building process (along with measurement considerations for the older students) and critical thinking will be needed to examine the best way to move our heavy snow and ice blocks. We are greatly looking forward to this fun and academically fulfilling opportunity to build something that his both unique and memorable.
