Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) at the school is an important part of a student's education. It fosters a sense of safety and belonging, builds positive relationships and school-connectedness, teaches and reinforces important skills such as emotional awareness, empathy, managing stress, coping with challenges, regulating behavior, resolving conflicts, building and maintaining healthy relationships, perspective-taking, setting goals, and responsible decision-making. Due to the current pandemic and school closures, many students have developed depression and anxiety. Other students that I work with have ADHD and have difficulty with attention span and organization. Some materials like fidget toys or sensory toys help students with anxiety or ADHD to focus better in the classroom. The Calming Cuddle Ball will help students with anxiety and depression during our counseling sessions or during a moment of crisis. The Growth Mindset Daily Practice Journals will be utilized with the students that are attending group counseling to learn about coping strategies so that they can be successful in the classroom and at home. The Therapy Games for Teens will help Improve Self-Esteem, Communication, and Coping for the students at the high school level. The Social Skills Activities for Kids will be used at the elementary school, which will help facilitate Making Friends, Talking and Listening, and Understanding Social Rules. The poster boards will help create a welcoming environment in my office for the students that come see me with social-emotional concerns. The ultimate goal in using these materials is to teach students coping skills/friendship skills/social skills so that the students can have better resiliency at school and at home.
