Emphasis on student exploration and the building is the cornerstone of a solid pre-k classroom. Through centers time, students in my classroom use tools to investigate physics concepts and use reasoning to build their thinking skills. When students use sand and devices on a sand table, it is as though the center has become an excavation site. When students use blocks and ramps, it is as though the center has become a construction site. Students may seem to be playing, but there is deeper learning that occurs. The blocks help students understand concepts of balance, weight, and gravity. The sand allows students to use their fine motor skills. We may take it for granted, but students who have autism spectrum disorders can benefit significantly from this sensory stimulation when they use their hands to explore. That's why I'm asking for your help. I have seen this phenomenon time and time again. Sensory stimulation helps students. With new materials for my students, I know that they will look forward to centers time.
