My students in my classroom come from all types of backgrounds and households. The diversity at the surface level is pretty obvious, but it is through our interactions with one another that they discover strong commonalities. Our classroom is a place where respect and expectations play a huge role. Currently at my school, we focus on culture and identity, and teaching in a diverse school allows us to read and have conversations about important issues and ideas. The students in my small group for Tier 2 instruction are comprised of students with many interests and many reading levels. One of the biggest challenges is finding a book that's reflective of them and their experiences and when they do find a book that is right for them, their engagement is through the roof! The diversity of these books will help foster reading among my students from various backgrounds. It is important for my students to feel safe and comfortable so they can make academic stride and feel good about their achievements.
