Students who struggle with emotions and making choices can be inspired through other forms of learning, such as reading, drawing, role-playing, and other artistic method. When students better understand themselves and their emotions, they are better equipped to learn. The COVID pandemic created more barriers as well as new challenges that students had never experienced. This includes having loved ones die, mental health concerns, isolation, depression, anxiety, etc. The books and materials that I have requested will directly serve students struggling with mental health concerns. I have requested books for students who are in K-2. Students in this age group learn more in story-telling and talking about the story after it is read to them. I have also requested for art supply, white boards, paint brushes and markers . Some students have a hard time talking about their emotions so I would like to provide another outlet to have students express their emotions and feelings. I have also requested fidget toys for students who have a ADHD or ASD. These toys can provide an alternate way to keep their hands occupied and to themselves while listening and talking. It is also used in Behavior Plans as a reinforcer for daily productivity. I have also included board games that are interrelated with Social and Emotional learning to build rapport with students who have challenges in trusting others. Some books that I have included teaches students to have empathy, to be kind, understand rules which is inclusive in teaching Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). When students are able to acknowledge and accept their emotions, they are better equipped to respond to it and have better emotion management. When students have better emotion management, they do better in school and in life.
