Many students that I serve have difficulty with self-regulation within their own academic environment. They require different stimulation in order to complete tasks independently and learn throughout their day. This includes deep pressure, pushing/pulling (the Squigz) or squeezing items, vestibular input of swinging or spinning, and much more. Without this input on a daily basis, they are not learning as much as they could due to frequent discomfort in their bodies.
This project will help fund a safe place in their classroom that they are able to retreat to in order to regulate their bodies and get the input they need.
The sensory fidgets are great for my students who are in the general education setting, but experience anxiety during stressful parts of their day. These items can often be the difference between them being able to stay in class and participate, or have a meltdown and get sent to the principal's office. I serve a variety of needs, but sensory regulation is at an all-time high with students returning to new environments and expectations after COVID. I have also included fine motor items, such as shortened pencils and a cordless pencil sharpener to use when I am traveling from my 6 different buildings.
I hope that my students will be able to increase their learning by having access to the regulation tools they need throughout their day, especially on days that I am not available due to being at another school. These tools will help provide their teachers with more support and the students the regulation they need!
