My library is not big, and most of our books have been donated from a local book collection center, books my friends kids have outgrown, or purchased by myself at yard sales over the summers. Most of our series books are from the 1990's and early 2000's eras, some even older! Not many are relatable to my urban kiddos. All of the books I have chosen are about characters that look like my students, live in areas similar to where my students live and are relatable to my students. OK, maybe not Wimpy Kid, but he is universal! With these new books, the kids who visit the library will have the opportunity to check out books about kids like them! The best way to increase reading ability is to read more. They need books they can relate to in order to want to read. These books will keep my students reading, continuing to help my students become lifelong readers!
