The ability to fluently read and write are foundational skills we need for children regardless of where they come from. In my classroom we are working on decoding words and how to know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills (RF.2.3). Since the majority of my students are not at grade level we have to take a step back and apply decoding and phonological skills from 1st grade and even Kindergarten. The pandemic has truly affected my students learning of basic knowledge and skills from their public school education. As they have never had a "normal year" and have additionally lost the majority of those social and emotional skills.
These tools will allow my students to realize that reading and writing is not just a book or grabbing a pencil. It can be done by playing games, hands-on activities and even collaboration with each other. This does not have to be independent always.
The items I have ordered align to:
RF.2.4 -Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
Although my students may not be able to read at the moment, these tools will allow them to begin to acquire more decoding skills and be able to comprehend the materials that they will be able to read on their own by the end of 2nd grade.
L.2.3- Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading and listening.
These skills will hopefully be achieved with different levels of books that include Nonfiction and Fiction. Additionally, this will allow them to practice their speaking skills with all of the activities and games that would be purchased.
