As students of a second language, it is most important to become culturally aware in addition to learning the Spanish language. My students will be able to explore a new cultural celebration that is now becoming more popular in their own country. They will also be able to express themselves individually with reflection on the meaning of the Day of the Dead and why? and how? it is celebrated in Mexico. They will create an ofrenda (an offering on paper) highlighting their creativity and need for personal expression at the same time reflecting on the celebration and how it might be reflected in their own lives. They will be introduced to the symbols of the day of the dead visually and musically. They will watch a video in the Spanish language and draw their own calaveras with the art supplies that I have requested, many of which can be used for other cultural celebrations as they study their second language. They will read the highly acclaimed story of Sandra Cisneros La Casa on Mango Street as they listen to the reading on CD by the author herself. I have included a request for a teachers guide to the story to give them meaningful activities to support their reading of the short novel. It is a story that I feel my students will be able to identify with and that will support their language acquisition. I will decorate my classroom with their creations and with the decorations I have requested to create a true Day of the Dead celebration. I have included the plastic covers so that they may save and share their projects with their families.
